For nine decades, the Arboretum has been connecting the residents of Seattle and the larger region to the wonders of the natural world. To celebrate our birthday, UW Botanic Gardens’ Associate Director Ray Larson and Bulletin editor Niall Dunne have created a walking tour that will teach you about some of the history behind the Arboretum’s plants and collections.
It starts with a look back at the land, pre-development, and ends with an example of how the Arboretum collection is continuing to evolve and grow today. For each passing decade or era, they’ve selected a representative tree specimen (including the full moon maple pictured above) to help tell our story.
