Carolina silverbell (Halesia carolina) is a beautiful tree to visit anytime of year. It offers lovely, bell-shaped spring flowers; eye-catching winged fruits in summer and beyond; good fall color; and stunning, furrowed bark. A gorgeous 40-foot specimen, dating to 1949, can be found along Azalea Way, not far south of the Hybrid Rhododendron Garden.
In the latest issue of the Arboretum Bulletin, editor Niall Dunne profiles the eastern North America tree and discusses how botanists have had a rare old time trying to classify the species.
